Webinar - insights to young women's participation

News

As part of the national #itsmymove campaign to support young women to move how they choose, Sport NZ is running a webinar series to help providers of sport and recreation develop a better understanding of how they can engage more girls to participate in and feel empowered by physical activities.

Wednesday 9 March: Re-thinking the offering

How can providers ensure their activities cater better to young women? With Frankie Stewart, Kim Lazor and Deb Johnson

One of the reasons for the drop-off in participation of young women centres around overload of other commitments such as schoolwork. 59% of 17-year-olds state they are just too busy.

This webinar explores how providers can rethink their offering to cater better to young women by considering the length and timing of sessions as well as low commitment drop-in options.

Join our panel from Forward Foundation and Wellington Cricket to hear about two of their key projects – the Not so Sport Club and Yeah! Girls Move – and see how they have diversified to engage more girls to participate.

Wednesday 16 March: Empowering young women to lead their own experiences

How can providers help girls feel more capable in their ability to grow their confidence? With Ash Peters, Isla Day and Megan Longman

Young women’s confidence in their abilities decreases during their teen years. Only 49% of 16-year-olds think they are good at physical activity compared to 75% of 12-year-olds.

When girls feel more capable in their ability, they will feel a sense of achievement and grow more confident to participate.

This webinar looks at how pressure by adults or unwanted competitive environments can affect girls’ confidence. Learn how if girls feel empowered to lead the activity or set the expectations themselves, they will gain more confidence.

Join our panel from WORD and Journeys to hear how they have built a co-design delivery approach and empowered young women as leaders.
