Statement from Sport BOP regarding Bay of Plenty Sport Awards

News

Tēnā koutou,

Since 1989, Sport Bay of Plenty has had the privileged responsibility of managing The Bay of Plenty Sports Awards. However, recent years have been challenging for the event. Nominations, interest and attendance have been in decline since 2019. Costs, meanwhile, have only continued to increase.

With that in mind, Sport BOP has made the difficult decision not to proceed with the 2023 event as we review the feasibility and structure of the event going forward.

This decision has been made after a thorough review and is believed to be in the best interest of both Sport BOP and the region’s sport, play and active recreation sector.

Athlete performance and sector achievements continue to be recognised through secondary school and club awards, various awards held by regional sports organisations and by the Adams Centre for High Performance annual awards.

Going forward, Sport BOP is excited at the prospect of utilising the support of its most important stakeholders in developing activities more in line with our Strategic Plan 2022-26. Our belief is that these activities will be to the benefit of our communities and in line with the underlying tenet of Sport BOP’s work – to get more people, more active, more often.

Sport BOP would like to thank our most recent title sponsor Forsyth Barr, as well as all sponsors who have supported the event, sports clubs and our regional sports organisations and all the previous winners, nominees and attendees for their incredible mahi. We continue to work alongside these important partners to ensure sport opportunities and success remain strong in the Bay of Plenty.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Nick Chambers - GM | Community Sport & Recreation
