Play on the Way at Aorangi School

News

Sport Bay of Plenty has been working with schools, councils and communities to undertake comprehensive play assessments in Rotorua's Western Heights and Tauranga's Tūtarawānanga/Merivale.

The aim of the Neighbourhood Play System surveys in each neighbourhood was to understand how various urban systems impact children’s play experiences and to support the development of recommendations that help develop a play-friendly environment.

The surveys were conducted with the support of Rotorua Lakes and Tauranga City Councils and are providing in-depth understanding of ways to create equitable tamariki-friendly urban environments.

As a result, positive changes have been made in the neighbourhood around Aorangi School, Rotorua, and Merivale School (Te Kura o Tūtarawānanga), Tauranga to encourage tamariki to play on the way to school.

Check out the video below on the impacts resulting from a Neighbourhood Play System report in Western Heights and the collaboration between Sport Bay of Plenty, Rotorua Lakes Council, Aorangi School and their community to create play opportunities in a nearby alley.
