Our People: Abby Furmage

Let's get to know our Finance and Operations Advisor, Abby Furmage.

How is hockey part of your life?

I play and manage Otumoetai Magic Intercity team for Otumoetai Hockey Club. I also play for Manawatu Woman’s National Hockey Championship Team.

I coach ACG Tauranga 1st XI Girls team, as well as coach Tauranga Hockey Woman’s 40+ Masters team.

Hockey has always been a big part of my life as my mum played for NZ and went to the Olympics. My sisters and I grew up watching her and playing the game together.

Why do you love hockey?

I love hockey because the game itself is a great mix of strategy and skill. It is also a great sport to develop as a person and learn more about yourself. Hockey has given me a lot of opportunity to create new friendships, travel overseas, develop as a person, and help others develop as players and people.

What other local sport, active recreation and play opportunities do you have a connection with?

I have always enjoyed running, not only for sport training but also for mental wellbeing. Last year I tried something new and played softball, which was so cool to do something different from hockey. I have also started doing reformer pilates at The Pilates Fix to strengthen and stretch my body.

What encouragement would you offer to someone who was wanting to try hockey or to be more active in general?

Just have fun and don’t take it too seriously. Focus on small steps to getting more active and it will end up creating healthy habits.

Tell us about your role at Sport Bay of Plenty.
