Success Stories

A six-year-old Maori boy from Whakatane did not enjoy being active and his mum struggled to get him to go outside and play. He much preferred to be inside on the PlayStation with his older brother. He also had a large school lunchbox and often ate high sugar and fat snacks.

His mum was keen to make changes, but was unsure how to do it. Over the year, this family went through a dramatic change with both activity and nutrition. They swapped fizzy for water and milk, changed to wholegrain bread and low fat milk, reduced portion sizes and ate far less chippies.

He went from being active for approximately 2.5 hours per week to being active for 13 hours a week. He has halved his screen time from 16 hours to eight hours a week. His mum commented that he is now a different child – he loves being outside riding his bike and playing games with her and his brother. He attended athletics and played hockey. They also plan a family outing every weekend based around activity which they all enjoy.

Mum said they now lead a different life to what they used too. She said they now make consistently healthier choices around food and activity. Mum and her sons are all proud of the changes that they have made.
