Highlights

  • The Sport Bay of Plenty Pathway to Podium continues to be a national benchmark in its support of athletes in the performance space. It has seen athletes such as Amy Robinson, Frances Davis, Monica Faulkner and Page Satchell move on to senior honours, and Fraser Sharp make the Paralympic team for Rio. The 2017 programme has 12 athletes from codes such as Mountain Biking, BMX, Windsurfing, Equestrian, Rugby 7s, and Athletics.
  • The Wade Gilbert PCA workshop on ‘Using reflection to become a better coach’ was well-received with 22 coaches in attendance - all who work in the performance coaching space. The focus was on defining what quality coaching looks like, coach reflection and coaching principles, and left a lot of coaches with a lot of actions to take post-workshop. Feedback includes: “Just wanted to say that last night’s workshop was awesome. I really enjoyed it and got lots out of it that I will now implement into my coaching processes.”

  • The Parafed Bay of Plenty Boccia development programme has seen coach and ex-Paralympian Stacey Roche working with eight participants via an open day and two eight-week blocks, with a third block planned for November 2017. This has now generated more interest, with another eight participants signed up going forward, bringing the total to 16.

Success Stories

Coach and Athlete Development Project with Wayne Goldsmith, Rotorua Swimming and Tauranga Triathlon

CoachForce-AR---Wayne---TGA-Camp

A collaborative cross-code coach, parent and athlete development project delivered across five days in Tauranga and Rotorua with Swim Rotorua and Tauranga Triathlon respectively. Wayne Goldsmith ran workshops for coaches, clinics for parents and athletes, to bring about changes to the systems and structures currently in place. Phenomenal feedback from all parties was received, such as this email:

“Thank you to you, BayTrust and Sport Bay of Plenty for enabling Wayne Goldsmith to visit Swim Rotorua. We have enjoyed an amazing few days. Wayne was absolutely brilliant in every way. He was enthusiastic from start to finish despite long days and lots of talking, presenting and coaching. Everyone here is completely stoked with him.

“Please pass on my sincere thanks to your colleagues, and especially to BayTrust for making it happen. Swim Rotorua is very humbled to have received such great support from the BayTrust CoachForce. I have made a commitment to Wayne that we will be implementing all the stuff he covered. I have no doubt that Swim Rotorua will go from strength to strength based on the wisdom of Wayne.” > Alastair Johnson (Head Coach)

BayTrust Athlete and Coach Scholarships

CoachForce-AR---Peter-Burling

The BayTrust Athlete and Coach Scholarships continue to go from strength to strength with a total of 39 athlete and 25 coach development awards being made across multiple sporting codes in the 2016/17 year. Special mention also goes to the 2016 Christine Tustain Award, provided through the Acorn Foundation, which went to Callum Gilbert from Canoe Slalom.

It was a great year for some of the previous multiple recipients of the Athlete Scholarships, with Peter Burling and Luuka Jones winning gold and silver at the Rio Olympics, Fraser Sharp competing in the Paralympics and, of course, Peter adding the America’s Cup later in 2017.
