Healthy Active Learning
We're supporting schools and kura to improve child and youth wellbeing through healthy eating and quality physical activity.
What is Healthy Active Learning?
Healthy Active Learning is a joint government initiative between Sport NZ, Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand, and the Ministry of Education to improve the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi through healthy eating and drinking and quality physical activity.
Part of the Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy, it is supported by Government investment of $47.6m between 2020-2024.
To deliver its component of Healthy Active Learning, Sport NZ has partnered with Regional Sports Trusts (RSTs) across the motu to provide a physical workforce supporting over 900 schools and kura.
Sport Bay of Plenty is part of the Healthy Active Learning initiative supporting primary and intermediate schools and kura to create healthy and active learning environments, and better connection to their local communities. In 2020, the first phase of the initiative was rolled out in Rotorua. Today, we work with almost 80 schools and kura across the Bay of Plenty.
The initiative is based on evidence showing children's nutrition and quality physical activity are linked to both academic achievement and improved physical and mental health.
