Anne’s Journey: Staying strong through strength and balance

When Anne from Kawerau first began attending aqua classes at the Kawerau Aquatic Centre, it was simply a way to stay active. But over time, her commitment to movement evolved into something much more vital, especially after a knee injury in mid-2024 changed her routine.

More than a year ago, Anne added the Keep on Your Feet strength and balance classes in Matatā to her weekly schedule. These classes, part of the nationwide ACC Live Stronger for Longer initiative and supported locally by Sport Bay of Plenty, are designed to help people aged 65 and over reduce their risk of falls through simple, effective exercises.

In 2024, Anne’s journey took a turn when she injured her knee. Despite her injury, Anne remained committed to her health. She continued attending the Matatā classes, adapting by doing the exercises seated.

“The strength and balance classes have been great. You can choose your level, either seated or standing,” she explains.

In October 2024, a specialist confirmed she needed a knee replacement. To help prepare for surgery, and under the advice of a physiotherapist, she focused on building strength through the Matatā classes.

Her dedication paid off. In May 2025, Anne underwent knee replacement surgery. Just three weeks later, she was back at the weekly classes, using them to aid her recovery, maintain muscle strength, and improve her balance.

“I didn’t know I’d lost my balance until I lost it,” she says. "Doing the exercises in class has helped me regain it and is helping me to build strength back in my knee. “I also really enjoy the social aspect of the classes,” Anne adds. "They help me stay connected, otherwise you do end up isolated.”

The classes are run by community instructors and supported with best practice resources from Sport Bay of Plenty and ACC who ensure the class exercises are safe and suitable to help prevent future falls.

Falls are the most common cause of injury in New Zealand, accounting for nearly 40% of all ACC claims. Research shows that regular strength and balance training reduces fall risk by improving leg strength, balance, and stability.

The Matatā class is supported by a strong community spirit, with local instructor Diana leading the weekly sessions and the Matatā Gym generously providing the venue free of charge.

The strength and balance class is one of 14 running across the Eastern Bay, including in Whakatāne, Ōhope, Edgecumbe, Ōpōtiki, and Kawerau. Sport Bay of Plenty project leader Amy Fowler says the classes are designed to be fun, safe and effective.

“Falling over and losing your strength and balance shouldn’t be considered a natural part of ageing,” says Amy. “Many falls are preventable through simple and effective strength and balance exercises.”

With falls accounting for one of the most common ACC claims for people aged 65 and over, Anne’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of staying active, connected and strong.
