Skip the traffic and experience your commute by foot this week as part of the nationwide Walk2Work Day.

Walk2Work Day is New Zealand’s national day to celebrate walking, and is this year held on Wednesday, March 14.

Living Streets Aotearoa started this annual day in 2009 to promote walking, its health benefits, and its priority position in the sustainable transport hierarchy.

Did you know that a 1000m walk (about 1300 steps or 12 minutes) will help you gain energy, use up 74 calories (for a 70kg person), lift your mood, improve balance and coordination, and improve heart health?

Take a solo trip to clear your head, or form a 'walking bus' with your friends, work mates or neighbours and make it a social occasion.
