Tour Aotearoa to raise funds for KidsCan
Tuesday, March 6, 2018
Sport Bay of Plenty CE Heidi Lichtwark's father Ray is embarking on a 3000km Bike Packing mission this month, with an aim to raise money for KidsCan.
Tour Aotearoa is one of the world’s great bikepacking trips: stretching 3000km from Cape Reinga to Bluff, it follows a combination of cycle trails, tracks, paths and lanes connected by the most enjoyable country roads available.
The Tour Aotearoa route was designed by Jonathan Kennett, a New Zealand cycling guidebook writer. In February 2016 he organised a Brevet event designed to highlight the best New Zealand Cycle Trail Great Rides, Heartland Rides, and quiet back country roads.
Ray started the journey at the end of February and according to the Tour's live track he is currently halfway down the North Island and has cycled more than 1000km.
He says his aim is to cycle 100km a day, and at 72 is one of the oldest in the field.
Thanks to Ray's supportters NZO-Ride Central and Wide Open for the bike gear and Dancing Moose Rotorua for the bike bags.
