Bay of Plenty running event Tauranga Half Marathon has introduced a new payment system for 2018 in order to encourage greater participation and help break down barriers to get people active.

Pay What You Want (PWYW) is a pricing system where the participant has the freedom to decide how much the event is worth to them, with a minimum $5 entry to over online registration and banking costs.

The system replaces the typical Early Bird Fee and will be available until April 4, 10 days before the April 15 event, after which time participants will be charged the standard $65 entry fee.

With costs often being a barrier that stops people from getting active, organisers state the motivator behind PWYW is to simply help more people take part in active events, for the benefit of improved health and wellbeing.

The event, which is in its 13th year, offers a number of distance options in addition to the half marathon: the Matua Mile, 5km, 10km and 15km.
