SportsTalk: Bringing Para-Sport to the Bay of Plenty

Wednesday, January 18, 2017

Sport can add value to anyone’s life and even more so in the life of a person with a disability.

Sport can have an astonishing rehabilitative influence for the disabled, not just to the physical body, but also in helping reintegrate those with a disability back into society. Sport teaches independence and the importance of individuals’ own strengths and abilities.

In recent history, there has more people with physical impairments participating in high performance sport, representing their countries, breaking records and inspiring others. Many para-athletes also enjoy competitive and recreational sport within their communities.

It can be difficult for people with disabilities to find which sporting opportunities are available in the local community and that’s where Parafed Bay of Plenty can help. We are working with various sports clubs and other organisations to develop more opportunities in 2017 and the launch of Boccia in the Bay is a great start to an exciting New Year.

Boccia begins on the 12th February in Mount Maunganui. This Have-a-Go Day is a fantastic opportunity to come and learn about the sport from our Boccia NZ representative and also the lead coach for the Bay who is a Boccia Paralympian. The focus is to have fun while having a go, so it will be an exciting day out! It will be great to meet everyone and the day provides a fantastic opportunity for participants to meet those with a shared interest.

We invite anyone with a physical disability or anyone interested in being part of the para-sport community to contact us. Our website provides details of sports already running along with contact details and directions for joining Parafed. Parafed Bay of Plenty members receive the latest information on new sports, events, have-a-go days and much more.

The Parafed Bay of Plenty team wish you a great start to the New Year and hope we can be part of the amazing sport and recreation experiences you have. If you are interested in Boccia or any other sport, whether it be playing or volunteering, please contact Leanne now 0277 272 333 or visit our website or facebook.
