SportsTalk: BOP to host Wheelchair Basketball Nationals
Monday, September 18, 2017
Parafed Bay of Plenty Wheelchair Basketball is hosting the Wheelchair Nationals at ASB Arena, Mount Maunganui, on September 23 and 24.
Parafed Bay of Plenty Wheelchair Basketball representative John Sligo says there will be eight teams from Canterbury to Northland expected for the tournament. In the lead-up, the Bay of Plenty team has been working on specific skills and drills at Monday night trainings, and doing additional exercise to build their fitness for the event.
Parafed Bay of Plenty successfully hosted the first round of the Northern League this March at ASB Arena where eight teams competed. This was a good early season breakthrough for us with Bay of Plenty winning one of three games. We look to forward to building on this at the Nationals.
We are also looking for volunteers to help out at the Nationals and ensure the event runs smoothly for all those in attendance.
Wheelchair Basketball is a great sport to be involved with and the team practices Monday nights at QEYC Tauranga from 6 - 7.30pm. New players are always welcome.
Parafed Bay of Plenty Executive Officer Ian McDonald says it’s great to see the Wheelchair Basketball team hosting two tournaments in Tauranga for the 2017 Season.
“We are also looking forward to hosting another tournament in March 2018 as part of a Festival of Disability Sport, where we will have four exciting sports: Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby, Boccia and Blind Sport competing over two days. This is definitely an event not to miss, so pencil March 24-25 in your diaries now.”
