Heidi Lichtwark: Chief Executive
Although Heidi took on the top role in 2014, she had been at Sport Bay of Plenty since 2003 and was in a leadership role managing the recreation and health areas of the organisation prior. When she's not going out to bat for us and our community, she's getting active herself and loves to spread her enthusiasm for life with the rest of the team.
1. Describe your role at Sport BOP in one sentence.
Leading a team of professional people to achieve our vision of more people, more active, more often.
2. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job and why?
The internal and external relationships formed to maximise outcomes for the community.
3. What is the most challenging aspect and why?
We are swimming against the tide in terms of getting people active – the environment is more sedentary than ever, and so cutting though this accepted norm can be hard work and more expensive that we would like (a double challenge of getting outcomes in a cost effective manner).
4. When you’re not working at Sport BOP, what do you like to get up to?
Very predictably, my favourite things to do are almost all physically active ones – bikram yoga, running, walking, swimming and being pushed by my new personal trainer. I also like reading, planning holidays and catching up friends over a glass of wine.
5. If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?
Mind reading – I think it would take guess work out of so many situations and provide quick insight into people’s unsaid beliefs and preferences.
6. Anything else you would like to add about yourself that may be of interest?
I am an accidental rabbit breeder. My son started with one pet rabbit four years ago – and slowly he’s convinced me to get more. Then we had an unplanned litter of babies and now have had about eight unplanned litters. The boy rabbits have recently all be fixed so that might be the end of that hobby. Whew!
