Gareth Yates: School Sport Team Leader

1. Describe your role at Sport BOP in one sentence.

My role as the School Sport Team Leader is to support teachers, schools, parents and community organisations to improve the quality of young people’s experiences of play, physical education, physical activity and sport within schools.

2. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job and why?

Providing the provision of sport opportunities in primary, intermediate and secondary schools for school-age students, resulting in more kids playing sport and developing an attitude/love of sport that will ensure they play it for life.

3. What is the most challenging aspect and why?

Bay of Plenty has a large geographical spread with more than 160 primary to secondary schools. One of the biggest challenges we face is meeting the demands of the many schools in the provision of quality sport outcomes for our Rangatahi.

We attempt to make it a priority to meet all schools each year, however, due to the physical layout and limitation of time and staff we are unable to provide this consistently throughout each year.

4. When you’re not working at Sport BOP, what do you like to get up to?

Surfing, free diving, rock climbing, social sports, house DIY.

5. If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

Flying would be very cool. I wouldn’t have to pay for transport to go to and from work! Flying around, going places I wouldn’t normally go and it would be a great way to see the world.

I could also fly out the back of the waves when surfing so I didn’t have to paddle and duck dive.

And of course I could visit my friends and relatives more often and potentially save a cat or two from a tree. You know, just to make sure I am using my superpowers for good.
