Dave Clarke: Coaching & Talent Development Team Leader

Dave, or Clarkey as he is affectionately known, runs a number of coach and talent development focussed programmes, including BayTrust CoachForce - a regional programme that pulls together the power of sport organisations, community funding bodies and Sport NZ to give more people in the Bay of Plenty a great coaching experience.

His special talents also include telling a fantatsic Dad joke.

Describe your role in on sentence?

I lead a team of 24-plus coach developers from 19 sports that deliver all the coach development in the Bay of Plenty region along with a variety of Sport NZ programs and initiatives for coaches and athletes.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job and why?

Being able to add value to the person or their performance (My coaching philosophy) because there is nothing more rewarding than seeing others achieve their potential.

What is the most challenging aspect and why?

Changing people’s beliefs. We have a saying when working with coaches – Have you been coaching for 10 years or 1 x 10 years? For us, coaching is a continuous journey of learning where we have to constantly reflect/review and make change. The moment we stand still we are already going backwards.

When you’re not working at Sport BOP, what do you like to get up to?

Coaching Squash, cycling, tramping, travel, cars, and following/researching/investigating world events.

If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

Invisibility – why would you not?!

Anything you would like to add about yourself?

I’ve had 17 broken bones over the years.
