Sport Bay of Plenty assists in Edgecumbe

Alongside local community and support groups, participants of the Sport Bay of Plenty Youth Engagement Programme made the journey from Tauranga to Edgecumbe to help with flood relief and clean-up.
The Youth Engagement Programme aims to use sport to empower youth in the Bay of Plenty, in particular disengaged youth, through increasing participation in sport for young adults – not just as athletes, but as volunteer coaches, managers or essential volunteers at events.
During the school holidays, the youth were assisting in the delivery of a school holiday programme in the morning and after lunch would assist in the Edgecumbe disaster clean-up alongside members of the Sport BOP team.
They have also been working alongside NAVA (Ngati Awa Volunteer Army), a group of 300-odd volunteers that get bused in from local marae to assist in flood relief.
It’s been a really eye-opening experience for the youth, who have never been part of a disaster relief before and to be able to help people has been really empowering for them to give back to the community.
