Social running event Parkrun comes to Tauranga
Tuesday, April 24, 2018
Global community running event Parkrun is being launched in Tauranga this weekend, thanks to Downtown Tauranga.
Formed in 2004, the initiative was started by 13 runners in London as a way to get moving, challenge yourself and create a community of like-minded people.
Since then, Parkrun has spread across the globe and now boasts an international family of more than half a million runners (and counting) – and Tauranga is the newest addition to this.
Parkrun is held every Saturday morning at 8am, and participants can either run or walk the 5km track. It’s not a race – it is about community, connecting, and health and wellbeing. Parkruns are never more than 5km as it’s a distance that anyone can complete (even if some participants are walking by the end).
The Tauranga parkrun venue will be at Kopurererua Valley Reserve, one of Tauranga’s largest and most beautiful reserves.
The inaugural run is Saturday, April 28.
Thanks to permission from Tauranga City Council, Tauranga Parkrun participants can enjoy a 5km journey starting at the Historic Village end of the valley with a great run along the board walk then on the track along the stream and back again.
How do you take part? Participants go online, register to get a barcode and then join in the fun - and all for free.
Once you’ve registered, you can run every week, and when you travel to other cities and towns in New Zealand and across the world you can run other Parkruns too.
