Introducing Verina Wihongi, our new Family Lifestyle Coach, who has returned to the Bay of Plenty after 16 years living in Balclutha in the South Island. Verina had a variety of roles in the South, including health orientated roles in Maori health, fitness and wellness programmes as well as 50/50 sharemilking 580 dairy cows! Verina also places a lot of her energy in to the sport of Taekwondo by mentoring and training the Tauranga youth development squad as well as others with her wealth of experience having represented NZ at the 2004 Athens Olympics. We are delighted Verina has joined the Sport Bay of Plenty team and brings her passion for Maori health, her children and whanau as well as the health and wellbeing of others.
About the Family Lifestyle Programme
The aim of the Family Lifestyle Coach Programme is to support, encourage and motivate whanau/families to make healthier choices through increasing activity and improving eating habits. The Family Lifestyle Coach works with children between the ages of 4 - 18 years old who have a BMI equal to or above the 95th percentile for their age. The Family Lifestyle Programme is free. If you are interested to join our programme talk to your GP.
Benefits of working with the Family Lifestyle Coach
Monthly family visits to set realistic and achievable goals to make positive lifestyle changes. A goal could be eating breakfast daily, eating at least one piece of fruit a day or switching the TV off and playing outside.
Linking whanau/families with a variety of sporting or recreational groups in the area.
Information on free and affordable physical activity options for you to enjoy.
Encourage healthy eating habits and provide affordable recipe ideas.
Organized activity sessions for the children/teenagers on the programme and family members are encouraged to join in. Initiatives in place for term one:
Tuesday afternoon activity sessions: team building activities, games and learning through playing. The programme is designed for kids and adults to simply have fun and improve their health.
Share the Ride: a six week mountain bike course at Waipa which includes bike safety and learning to ride confidently in the forest. It is the ultimate experience!
Taekwondo: have a go for six weeks, learn discipline, gain confidence, improve fitness, health as well as self defence. This class caters for all ages.
