From August 5th the greatest sporting event on the planet – the Summer Olympic Games – begins in Rio de Janeiro. If you are thinking about capturing student interest and planning on doing some teaching and learning on the Rio Olympic Games then please read on as there are lots of exciting new resources on the New Zealand Olympic Committee website.
These free resources under the banner of GAME ON! aim to teach your students about the Olympic Games, but also inspire them to live the Olympic Values of Excellence, Respect, and Friendship.
Firstly, on the RIO 2016 GAMES RESOURCES page you will find three sets of engaging teaching and learning resources. These can be dipped into separately or be shaped into a unit of work on the Rio Games. Each activity has several multi-media links to Olympic athlete stories of inspiration that your students will love. Get your class up and exercising each day with the MOVIN’ TO RIO dance routines. These are fun and easy to follow, and each one features an Olympic athlete also learning the dance.
The TRAINING FOR RIO resources are really engaging activities based on four skills athletes need for Rio – speed, endurance, strength, and accuracy. They will bring all the key competencies into play and there are Teacher Notes and Reflective Questions to accompany each activity.
The PLAYING AT RIO resources are a series of fun games which will inspire your students to play with the Olympic Values of respect, friendship, and excellence. Some games are South American and some are Kiwi games, but most will be new and exciting for your students.
Secondly, read about how to join the worldwide celebration of the Olympic Movement by running your own OLYMPIC DAY or EVENT. Olympic Day is celebrated across the globe on June 23rd however as that is a Saturday this year you can celebrate it in the week either side of the 23rd. There is a wonderful new resource which will guide you step by step through an Olympic Day, or you could decide to just do some of the activities or hold an Olympic Run.
Thirdly, don’t forget to check out THE INSPIRATION HUB on the website. These inspiring stories of our athletes will add life, richness, and context to your class studies.
School Ambassador Visits
The educational objective of the New Zealand Olympic Committee is to inspire young New Zealanders to live the Olympic Values through sport and the celebration of the Olympic Games.
A specific focus is to ensure our Olympians’ stories are maximised for the benefit of our youth. The NZ Olympic Ambassador Programme was developed to address this goal using the inspiration of Olympian role models living the Olympic Values.
