BOPSS Triathlon Championships 2020, Ōhope Whakatāne 25 February
Beautiful day for a triathlon race. Schools across the Bay of Plenty attended including Pāpāmoa College bringing over 50 athletes. Fantastic group of athletes displayed some fantastic finishing times. Triathlon events are so demanding and all that participated finished the race even when there were hiccups on the course like bike punctures or hot weather.
We had a lot of teams this year and all doing very well.
Junior race (under 14) in the boys section: Finnely Oliver from Mount College - fantastic finish by the young man who led from the start. In the girls race Hannah Baxter from Trident High School prevailed.
Intermediate under 16 race in the boys section: it was very tight with the final few medals coming down to seconds. Well done to Bailey Fredericken from Trident High School ahead of the rest. Morgan Overington from Whakatāne High School another athlete to watch as he was a clear pace ahead of the rest of the female competitors.
Senior event was very demanding as the day heated up. Congratulations to all of the seniors for finishing in the hot conditions. Olivia Cummings from Otumoetai College won the girls race in a very good time and is an exciting athlete to watch. Marijn Lenoir from Tauhara college also had a well fought finish.
Special mention to an exceptional performance by Sophie Webber (under 13) and the biggest pool of competitors from Taupo Nui A Tia College outright winner of the girls and boys race - 1st Overall.
Thank you to all the schools and parents that helped volunteer and keep our athletes safe out of the course and a special mention to OTC, the Mount and Whakatāne sport coordinators for all the assistant on the day.
To all the other athletes well done for finishing such a demanding course. Thank you Eastern Bay Triathlon club members and Paul Miller for a great day. Without people like you this event could not happen.
