Mini-Marathon Field Opens
Tuesday, March 26, 2013
On Thursday 18th April primary school children throughout the wider Bay of Plenty and Waikato Regions will get the chance to take part in and complete the Rotorua Mini Marathon, and finish across the same finish line as the iconic Rotorua Marathon.
The event is being organised as a collaborative project between Event Promotions (Rotorua Marathon Directors), Events and Venues (Rotorua District Council) and Sport Bay of Plenty, with the aim of getting more primary school children involved in the sport.
“578 children participated last year and feedback for the event was excellent,” says Primary School Events Coordinator Jeni Nunn from Sport Bay of Plenty, “in 2013 we have opened the event up to the whole of the Bay of Plenty and Waikato Regions to encourage more children to experience the marathon atmosphere.
Participating children are required to track 40km worth of running in the build up to the event (between February and April) so that they can complete the final 2.1km of their marathon on the actual Rotorua Marathon course; “this gives them an idea of just how far a full marathon is, and a true sense of accomplishment when they complete it. 42km over two months is a wonderful accomplishment for children” says Jeni Nunn.
To acknowledge the significant effort from the children, Event Promotions are providing spot prizes and a goody bag for each successful Mini Marathon participant.
