A swim school in Tauranga has won a national award for promotion – after opening two years ago.
Judea-based Liz van Welie Swim School was awarded the national Swim School Promotion Award for swim schools with 1000 pupils and under, at the 2013 New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers Conference in Queenstown last week.
Owners Greg and Liz Cummings attended the conference to receive the award at the gala awards night, which honours New Zealand’s best in coaching and teaching swimming.
The award criteria focussed on effective and successful promotions that have led to significant growth for swim schools.
With Liz van Welie Swim School a relatively new comer on the scene, having only opened at the beginning of 2011 in Cypress St Judea, they have already achieved growth, and numbers of students, matching more established swim schools throughout New Zealand.
Greg and Liz say they have worked with their office manager Jenna Newell to collate and present a variety of material to establish a strong market brand.
“Ironically, our surveys of all our customers tell us that more than 50 per cent come to us through word of mouth. We reinforce this regularly with all staff and we’re so grateful for the level of professionalism all staff bring to their role,” says Greg.
Car stickers, inserts in school newsletters, numerous sponsorships of kindergarten events, presenting at children’s markets and expos, swim bags, caps and a thriving Facebook page have all contributed.
Liz van Welie Swim School established a strong market brand with their logo featuring wee Kau kau (Maori for swim), which is seen on many rear windows of cars throughout the Western Bay.
Recently, the swim school was one of ten in New Zealand asked to engage with a successful campaign, in partnership with NZSCAT and Water Safety New Zealand.
Through the campaign, important messages surrounding water safety for pre-school children and their parents were delivered to early childhood centres around Tauranga.
Liz is thrilled with award. “When you put your name to something it is just fantastic for that to be associated with a thriving business that provides a quality service in such an important life skill.
“We have big plans we’re working through now so we’re looking forward to the year ahead – this award is the ‘icing on the cake’ for two years of hard work.”
