Green all GO in Kawerau!

The Maurie Kjar Memorial Swimming Pool in Kawerau has been a lifeline for Sophie who has been determined to improve her health since her husband passed away nearly two years ago.
Diagnosed with diabetes 8 years ago and more recently high blood pressure, Sophie knew she needed help. After a consultation with her doctor, he referred her to Sport Bay of Plenty’s Green Prescription programme.
During her initial meeting with a Green Prescription Lifestyle Coach, Sophie identified realistic physical activity and nutrition goals that she could commit to during the six-month programme.
“I want to reduce my insulin levels for my diabetes and I know that being active on a daily basis will help me to do that.” While on the programme, Sophie attended the four-week self-management course for diabetes facilitated by the Eastern Bay Primary Health Alliance.
“These courses have given me more knowledge and understanding about my medications and lots of great ideas from the Dietitian about what foods I should be eating.”
After 6 months’ being on the programme, Sophie has reached her goals of reducing her daily insulin levels (66 to 52 units) and has increased her physical activity in the pool from initially walking 10 lengths to now swimming freestyle 50 lengths every other day. Awesome work Sophie!
