Exciting Opportunity for Pregnant Women

Sport Bay of Plenty is excited about a new opportunity for pregnant women in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. 

With funding from the EBPHA Community Health Initiative Fund; Sport Bay of Plenty has developed The Bump Club - a free physical activity and educational programme aimed at supporting women during pregnancy.

There has been a lot of research recently on the connection between healthy pregnancies and the health of mother and baby during the first two years.  Healthy weight gain, good nutrition and physical activity are all part of the Bump Club programme.

Starting with a workshop on pregnancy and healthy weight gain, participants will then have the opportunity to participate in 6 free Shakti yoga classes and 6 aqua aerobics classes.  The programme will end with another educational workshop on the benefits of breastfeeding and child development.

Exercising during pregnancy can boost your energy, improve your mood and even alleviate some of the aches and pains of pregnancy, including backaches, constipation and swelling.  Most types of exercise are safe during pregnancy, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, including low-impact aerobics programs and aqua aerobics,

Whakatane Aquatic centre will once again support Sport Bay of Plenty with the delivery of Aqua Aerobics.  Aqua aerobics provide the same workout for the heart and body as traditional classes without the risks of falls and other injuries.  The buoyancy of the water requires you to support only 50 percent of your weight, which alleviates stress on your joints and muscles.

Erin Lewis is a qualified Yoga Teacher with over 20 years’ experience.  Pregnancy Yoga was part of her training as it requires a specific style, she is also Pilates qualified and has had three pregnancies with Yoga herself.  Shakti Yoga helps relax mother and baby and includes strengthening work for back and legs to help with a strong posture, and stretching work to help prepare for labour and birth.

The next intake begins May 24th.
