EBOP Inter-School X Country Championships 2013
Wednesday, June 26, 2013
The championships were held yesterday at Woodlands School in Opotiki where the courses were very challenging pushing some runners to their limits. Over 320 children competed for the chance to go on to the Bay of Plenty Championships in July. The children completed in their own school cross country, then went on to run in their school cluster cross country to get to yesterday’s championships.
Exia Edwards, Primary School Events Coordinator at Sport Bay of Plenty said, “The course is tough. I haven’t seen another course where the kids are crying at the finish line. They clamber over the finish line and they’re absolutely stuffed.”
Eight year old Stevie Emery of Ashbrook School and Te Whata Tau O Putauaki’s Te Ua Hoskins came first in their age group, while in the nine year old age group Demi Oliver of Ohope and Zepher Thompson of St Josephs, Opotiki won their respective races. The 10 year old age group winners were Kaelee Doherty-Meharry from Otakiri and Kevin Paulsen of Awakeri. In the 11 year old age group Brad Fleming and Hope Middleton both from Thornton School dominated their races while 12 year olds Paris Williams from Ashbrook and Jack Du Toit demolished their fields.
The day ended with a relay involving teams from each cluster, Kawerau, Whakatane, Rangitaiki and Opotiki, entering a runner from each age group to compete against the other clusters to end the day with a bit of fun. Opotiki Boys blitzed the boys relays and Whakatane Girls won their relay.
Congratulations to the overall winners - the Rangitaiki cluster.
