Friday, October 21, 2016

Tickets for the 2016 Bay of Plenty Sports Awards are available now.

Outstanding sporting performances by Bay of Plenty athletes on the world stage have been reflected in the finalists selected for the 2016 Bay of Plenty Sports Awards.

The annual awards organised by Sport Bay of Plenty, salute outstanding achievement by Bay of Plenty sportspeople at home and abroad over the past twelve months. All category awards as well as the Supreme Award are widely regarded as the ultimate accolades for sporting excellence in our region.

The experienced judging panel hotly debated a high number of quality nominations during the day-long judging session, ultimately determining each category’s finalists for the awards evening to be held at the ASB Arena, Baypark, Mount Maunganui on November 18th 2016.

Sport Bay of Plenty Sport Manager and judging convenor, Megan Cleverley says, “The calibre of nominations never fails to amaze me, and it is fantastic what Bay of Plenty athletes, coaches, officials and administrators are achieving. This year has highlighted the number of athletes performing on the international stage, and in particular the wide variety of sports and schools doing well. This makes the judging job even more difficult but I guess it’s a good problem to have.”

As well as the major awards for sporting achievement like the Farmer Auto Farmer Auto Village
International Sportsperson of the Year, Bayleys Real Estate Sportsman of the Year and Holland Beckett Lawyers Sportswoman of the Year; categories such as the Bay of Plenty Times Official of the Year, Radio Sport Club of the Year and Dudfield Bryce Print Open Service to Sport awards celebrate the community and volunteer elements so vital to sport in our community.

The Bay of Plenty Secondary School Sports Awards will also be presented on the night. These awards recognise secondary school students who have achieved nationally or internationally and include the Te Ohomai Secondary School Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, Bay Office Products Depot Secondary School Boys Team of the Year, Bay Cardiology Secondary School Girls Team of the Year, Aurecon Student Contribution to Sport, VO2 Secondary School Coach of the Year and the BOP Principals’ Association Secondary School Service to Sport Award.

“As illustrated at the recent Olympic Games, the Bay of Plenty has a depth of sporting talent the sports awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise this annually. It is a privilege to be able to honour our top athletes, officials and coaches again in 2016. We look forward to following their continuing achievements in the future, while also celebrating their contributions to date. We are proud to continue to host the Bay of Plenty Sports Awards, which have been celebrating sporting excellence since 1969,” says Sport Bay of Plenty CEO Heidi Lichtwark.

The People’s Choice poll continues this year with the public having an opportunity to vote for their favourite Bay of Plenty junior athlete. Running from the 25th October to the 8th of November, all votes go into the draw to win an Apple iPad Pro 32GB powered by Vodafone. The winner will be announced soon after via the Sport Bay of Plenty Facebook page and on the Bay of Plenty times and Rotorua Daily Post websites.

Tickets for the 2016 Bay of Plenty Sports Awards are available now at Adults $90, Secondary School Students $45.
