Outstanding performances by Bay of Plenty sports men and women on the world stage have been reflected in the finalists selected for the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic 2013 Bay of Plenty Sports Awards. The awards organised each year by Sport Bay of Plenty, salute outstanding achievement by Bay of Plenty sportsmen and women in sport at home and abroad over the past 12 months. All category winners and the Supreme Award recipient are widely regarded as the ultimate accolade for sporting excellence in our region. The six-strong judging panel worked through a high number of nominations for the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic 2013 Bay of Plenty Sports Awards, each category was hotly debated at the day-long judging session ahead of the gala awards evening to be held at ASB Arena, Bay Park on Friday, 22nd November 2013.
”The calibre of nominations and the variety of sports never fails to amaze, and it is fantastic what Bay of Plenty athletes, coaches, officials and administrators are achieving. This year has highlighted the number of athletes performing on the world stage, and in particular the wide variety of sports. I certainly don’t envy the judges who are charged with making the tough decisions and determining who the winners are” says Sport Bay of Plenty CEO Wayne Werder.
Also presented on the night are the Bay of Plenty Secondary School Sports Awards. These awards recognise secondary school students who have achieved nationally or internationally and include the Waiariki Institute of Secondary School Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, Bay Office Products Depot Boys Team of the Year, Bay Cardiology Girls Team of the Year, Aurecon Best Student Contribution to Sport, CodeBlue Coach of the Year as well as BOP Principals Association Secondary School Service to Sport Award.
Dr Alan Hampton, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, said he was delighted to partner with Sport Bay of Plenty in order to deliver the Awards in 2013.
“Our long-standing partnership with Sport Bay of Plenty reflects the importance we place on ensuring our region is healthy and active,” said Dr Hampton.
“The Bay has a fantastic array of talent and is home to a large number of top sportsmen and sportswomen. It is a privilege to be able to honour our top athletes and officials at these annual awards. All those listed as finalists are a credit to their communities and our region and we look forward to following their continuing achievements in the future.”
New in 2013 is the Peoples Choice campaign, a fun interactive way for the public of the Bay of Plenty to get involved, by voting for their choice of athlete through the Sport Bay of Plenty Facebook page. Starting on the 25th of October through to the 13th of November, all votes go into the draw to win a 4G Apple iPad Mini from Vodafone. The winner will be announced on the 15th of November on MoreFM 93.4.
