ActiveVoice: Outdoor Options in October
Tuesday, October 4, 2016
October is a fantastic time to get outdoors and active while exploring the Bay of Plenty.
Fortunately, there’s a range of free and discounted outdoor activities happening all over the region as part of Play in the Bay’s Outdoors Month.
In the Rotorua area there’s a bunch of regular activities scheduled throughout the week. Every Monday and Friday during October a social walking group meets at the Redwoods Visitor Centre for a steady paced 40 to 60-minute jaunt through the forest. Also in the Redwoods on Fridays are outdoor yoga classes focused primarily for runners. Those seeking a gentler outdoor workout will enjoy the benefits of lunchtime Tai Chi on Wednesdays at Kairau Park.
All eyes will be on the Eastern Bay on Saturday, October 15th as teams of up to four people make their way around farmland, looking for checkpoints and completing mystery activities in the Waimana Wonder Adventure Race. The two-hour race is suitable for families, high school students and social adults. Also happening out East during October are the Connecting with Nature Walk for Mental Health Awareness on Wednesday 12th and the Opotiki Community Walking Group on Tuesdays.
There’s two very different walks happening in the Western Bay during October. Don’t forget to bring a torch along to TECT All Terrain Park on either Friday 14th or Friday 28th for the Glow Worm Walk. This free guided walk follows the Te Rerenga Tunnel Track and is suitable for all levels of fitness. This will fill up so register A.S.A.P. Sunday 16th provides a rare opportunity to take a guided walk on Matakana Island while raising money for maintenance of local marae. The barge leaves from Omokoroa Jetty and participants have the option of a 10km or 12km walk covering farmland, roads and bush trails.
These activities are all aimed at beginners and are a great way to see more of your backyard while keeping active and meeting new people.
