ActiveVoice: Hey, Let's Play!

Some of my fondest childhood memories come from adventures I’ve had with my sister and friends in our backyard.
We’d be out there for hours climbing trees, making huts, creating treasure maps and hiding trinkets and treasures, or making telephones from yoghurt pots and string so we could talk to each other between our tree huts.
If the weather was wet that didn’t deter play and we certainly didn’t have a smartphone to entertain us – so instead we would raid Mum’s linen closet to build a hut under the dining table, or put on our gumboots and jackets before heading outdoors.
Getting outdoors and active is just as important, if not more so, for the children of today with many children exceeding maximum screen time guidelines, while at the same time, physical activity levels are insufficient for young people – especially females.
Due to these concerns and our desire for children of today to reinvigorate their imagination when playing as we used to, the Recreation Team at Sport Bay of Plenty wanted to create an activity to get children back to backyard play – and came up with Hey, Let’s Play!
Launched in our current Outdoors and Active calendar that runs until the end of November, Hey, Let’s Play! provides 30 ideas to get children and adults alike having fun in and around their backyard, local parks or reserves.
Some of the ideas include:
- Make a car, plane or submarine out of boxes
- Have a water balloon fight
- Mix dirt with water and paint a masterpiece
- Help someone wash a car
- Play a game of hopscotch
- Pack a homemade picnic and head to the local park.
These activities will get you kids away from screens, moving more and having fun among mud, water, dirt, bugs and more. The mud will be washed from their clothes and faces, but their memories, like mine, will last a lifetime.
