ActiveVoice: Has spring sprung?

Thursday, August 16, 2018

There is a certain buzz around the office in the past few days as we all gaze hopefully out the window and wonder if the warmth we feel in the sun is the start of something new.

We all know being active outdoors in nature has amazing wellbeing benefits, and although all of us here at Sport Bay of Plenty are proponents of being active all year round, it just gets easier when the sun is out and a warm breeze greets us at the door.

The end of the winter season is close … only a few more games of rugby and netball for the children’s teams. Kids’ sport is such a wonderful pastime: Up early Saturday mornings and out to the sidelines cheering on the team before offering up a hot chocolate afterwards to warm them back up again.

As a mum, it is often the kids’ sport that comes first, although I try to get a yoga session or mountain bike ride in occasionally. There are a few other things I’d like to try, and I know one day time will be on my side. Time is a barrier for many women, as well as for teenage girls, but there’s also many other barriers to physical activity that females face: finding the right activity, cost, family vs self, self-image and concerns about not fitting in, looking right or doing well.

The great news is that you don’t have to look too hard to find opportunities to get active around the Bay of Plenty – it’s all about joining in and giving it a go. Women and girl specific cycling and walking groups, exercise classes and bootcamp style activities provide females a place to get involved and get active.

Sport Bay of Plenty’s Spring Starter Series running throughout September and into October is another great way to try something new alongside other women and girls in a safe environment. With over 18 different activities, there really is something for everyone!

I’ve just registered for Tai Chi, along with a girlfriend, at a time that suits both of us. Straight after work, not too late, not too early and not too expensive! I’m looking forward to enhancing my wellbeing and achieving inner balance as we gear up for the warmer and longer days of spring.
