ActiveVoice: Effective communication key to club growth

From texting and social media, to meeting with a colleague or first introductions, we’re regularly communicating (and in more ways than ever).
But it’s important to remember that communication is not a ‘one size fits all approach’. The way one person communicates or understands communication may work for them, but it could be like speaking a foreign language to someone who doesn’t converse in this way.
For example, millennials are proficient in social media, living and breathing the digital space, but communicating with their grandparents in the same way they do their peers is never going to work.
So how does this all relate to community sport?
As we know, clubs rely on a huge number of volunteer hours, so communication needs to be created and maintained with limited time and resources.
The key, therefore, is keeping it simple, yet effective, so it does not become a huge time or resource burden for volunteers. That’s why it is crucial to know, first and foremost, who you are as an organisation and what you want to achieve, so you can put time and effort into communication channels that will work for you.
For example, if you’re a club with a membership demographic aged 55-plus, social media may not be a priority for you, but email and regular meetings may be the perfect tool to keep your group and the public informed.
Good communication done well is vital to ensuring the growth and longevity of your club. Ensure your communication is regular and consistent, to paint a picture of an active, happening club which members enjoy being a part of.
This helps with recruitment of new members too – if someone looking for a club to be part of sees your group as organised, professional, friendly and approachable chances are they’ll want to be part of the action.
