Cycling activity across the Bay of Plenty is about to crank up with Sport Bay of Plenty’s Bike Month and the national Aotearoa Bike Challenge now underway for February.
The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is a great way to try cycling and win prizes! It’s easy! Register at www.lovetoride.net/bop, cycle for at least 10 minutes between February 1st and 28th, log your rides and encourage your colleagues to sign up and ride too. The higher percentage of staff cycling the more chance you have to win prizes.
Bike Month may also be the incentive you need to leave the car at home and cycle to work or school. Go by Bike Day in Tauranga and Whakatane is on Wednesday 8th and in Rotorua on Friday 10th. Each region has various pit stops supplied with refreshments and prizes for you to collect along your journey. For a full list of pit stop locations and information head to http://www.sportbop.co.nz/get-active/play-in-the-bay/go-by-bike-day/
Friday 10th will also launch us into the craze of cycling action that is the Rotorua Bike Festival. Stepping it up for its fifth year the festival features 25 events, 12 of which are new events including the Agroventures Freestyle AirBag BIG AIR Competition and the Frocks on Bikes Fashion Show. Check out the full programme at http://www.rotoruabikefestival.com/programme
Bike Basics workshops held in the Western Bay of Plenty will provide you with the skills to correctly set up and maintain your bike along with handy tips like how to change a tube. Four free evening workshops are available across the month. The Tauranga BMX Club are also hosting an open day for those new to BMX on Sunday 19th from 1pm -4pm. Head on down to experience a club night atmosphere, learn how to use the start gate and ride down the ramp.
In the Eastern Bay you can challenge yourself with the Earthcycles Legend of Pu Twilight Race Series. Offering cross country racing for all ages across grade 2 and 3 trails the twilight race is a great affordable night out for the whole family with gold coin entry. Alternatively, wind down after work with an evening mountain bike ride at Rawhiti. Beginner and social rides are being held each Wednesday during Bike Month departing at 5:30pm.
