Active-Aging Gym Have a Go Day

Tuesday, October 18, 2016

Sport Bay of Plenty are facilitating a Have a Go Day at Kulim Park’s Active-Aging Gym on Friday 21st October as part of Play in the Bay’s Outdoors Month.

The gym is specifically designed for older people and is the first of its kind in the city. There are thousands of these types of facilities around the world and research has shown regular use of gyms such as these can increase muscle strength which helps to improve balance and reduces the risk of falling.

Tauranga over sixty-fives have a one in three chance of falling this year while over eighties have a 50% chance. Strength and balance programmes including the use of such gyms can reduce the risk by 29 per cent.

Sport and Recreation students from Toi Ohomai will be present on the day between 10.30am and 12.00pm to demonstrate and assist participants with the gym and the use of its seven different exercise stations. Familiarisation with the equipment and exercises will make it easier for users to embrace the facility with confidence and in a safe manner while encouraging ongoing use.

As well as the physical benefits the facility offers a chance for users to develop knowledge and confidence while engaging with other members of the community.
