2014 Governance development scholarship recipients announced

Sport NZ has announced the recipients of its women in sport governance development scholarships and mentoring programme participants for 2014.

Sport NZ Chief Executive Peter Miskimmin said, “The women in sport governance development scholarships and mentoring programme were introduced this year among a range of initiatives to help address the overall gender imbalance of New Zealand sports boards.”

“While we’ve got a long way to go to achieve our governance gender diversity targets, we’re encouraged by the change in attitude we’re seeing in the sector and initiatives like this are contributing to this change.

“We’ve also received great feedback from the women involved in this year’s inaugural intake and from the mentors.

“We’re looking forward to more of the same next year and congratulate those selected to be involved.”

The majority of the eight development scholarship recipients are members of the Appoint Professional women in sport governance group.

Simon Telfer, founder of Appoint said, “It is great to see a growing group of talented women listed on the appointbetterboards website and this should send a strong message to boards that well qualified women are available and interested in governance roles.”

The scholarship recipients will benefit from governance study and training opportunities to the value of $20,000 in total. The mentoring programme participants are all currently serving on sport sector boards and will each receive ten hours of one-on-one support from experienced governance practitioners.
