What’s New
- Thanks to a collaborative partnership with Travel Safe and Cycling NZ , Sport Bay of Plenty employed a part time Community Cycling Coordinator. This role was developed to provide adults with cycle training to lead and participate in regular cycling for both recreation and active transport purposes.
- We held forums to gather insights from teenage girls to understand their motivations and barriers to participation in sport, recreation and physical activity. Shared these findings with the secondary school sports coordinators and as such some schools have made adjustments at their schools to reduce some of these barriers identified.
Highlights
- Forty-three new Ride Leaders were trained in 17/18 resulting in 86 trained Ride Leaders on the database in the Tauranga/Western Bay region. These Ride Leaders take turns to lead recreational ride groups held regularly throughout the week. Due to significant growth, two of these groups have had to split into many smaller groups each week, with one group reporting a database of approximately 160 people.
- In February 2018, 904 Bay of Plenty participants took part in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge. Across the Bay of Plenty 122 organisations registered for the challenge. While this is a national challenge, Sport Bay of Plenty managed a ‘child site’ specifically to motivate Bay of Plenty organisations to participate.
Success Stories
Spring Starter Series
383 women signed up to be part of the second Spring Starter Series (SSS) held in September 2017. The participants commit to weekly activities for 4-6 weeks.
- Activities were varied across the region and included things like golf, dance, mountain biking and hula fitness.
- 86% participants were new to the SSS and ages ranged from under 20 – 65+years.
- Many participants fed back that they had never tried the activity before or that they hadn’t tried it for many years.
- The most popular reasons for trying things during the Spring Starter Series were to try something new, take time to do something for themselves, learn new skills or to improve their fitness.
- Many also reported that they found it a good way to meet new people.
Cooney Lees Morgan Lunchtime Challenge
The Cooney Lees Morgan Lunchbreak Battle 2018 was organised by Sport Bay of Plenty’s Play in the Bay team and heavily supported by staff and students of the Youth Engagement Programme.
Using a combination of email marketing and online social media promotion, the lunchtime challenge was oversubscribed with over 40 teams registering. The challenge involved three events, held once per week for three weeks at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre. These involved loads of fun physical activity challenges as well as some brainteasers and trivia.
