From the CEO

The 16/17 financial year is best summarised as a year of strategic development. During the year, we completed consultation with stakeholders and finalised ‘Vision 2030’ – which is a long-term picture showing what the sector is aiming to achieve.

Dovetailing into this, Sport BOP completed our Strategic Plan for 17-21. Both these documents required the organisation to consider the environment, the trends and changes in population, social connections and discuss what our stakeholders thought should be prioritised.

It was a fascinating and empowering process. There were some surprises along the way. However, mostly extrapolations of what we saw happening currently.

The process also reaffirmed that the Sport BOP team are essential to both understanding the community and delivering outcomes for the organisation. They are always keeping it real, leading the way and showing how a one-team approach can gain results.

Analysing, learning and developing solutions to small, as well as large, challenges and opportunities was important in 16/17. To this end, we had several new projects finalised including:

  • The Bay of Plenty Spaces and Places Strategy (in collaboration and the councils of BOP and Sport NZ)
  • Positive Sporting Environment project – supporting regional sport organisation and schools with consistent messages about fair play
  • Older Adults Physical Activity – an initiative with ACC to encourage strength and balance in older adults.

We also placed emphasis on ensuring the organisation could respond positively to all health and safety requirements. We assessed our risks, and ensured that an internal advisory team’s recommendations were implemented.

There were also enhancements to the existing services and continued thinking about how technology could assist us to be more effective; the new Coaching Passport and Virtually on Track are excellent examples of this.

By the end of 16/17, we were also committed to adapting a future-focussed approach to our office environments. After 12 months of planning and consultation, we will no longer extend our Tauranga sports house building, but rather recast the way the space is used to maximise space and productivity.

Overall, the 16/17 year has been a big year of planning and consultation with our collaborative partners. Relationships are everything in the Sport BOP business – and we must acknowledge our supportive partners. We are looking forward to continuing the work we do guided by Vision 2030 and the Sport Bay of Plenty Strategic Plan.

Ngā mihi nui,
Heidi Lichtwark - CEO
