Active Families

What’s New

  • Cooking classes were held in the Eastern Bay in June. Five families attended this session. Most of the children were successful in being able to cook these meals for their families at home after this session.

  • The Whakatane Tennis Club provided rackets and balls and allowed our Active Families to play free at our sessions during the school holidays.

Highlights

  • Referral numbers for the year were 73 in the EBOP and 85 in the WBOP – these continue to be significantly over target. Of these referrals 64% were Maori in the EBOP and 36 % in the WBOP.
  • Sport Bay of Plenty continues to be a representative on each of the collaborative Childhood Obesity groups – ‘Raising Healthy Kids’ for BOPDHB and ‘Te Tunake’ for Lakes DHB.
  • Collaboration with the Oral Health team to bring the Western Bay Active Families together for some healthy cooking sessions with Stephen Cameron.
Weetbix TRY
  • Involvement in the Weetbix TRYathlon. Training sessions at Memorial Park were held every Sunday in the build up to the Mount Maunganui Weetbix TRYathlon which was held on Sunday 3rd December.
Active Families at McLaren Falls
  • Discounted entry fees sponsored by Sanitarium allowed fourteen children (including whanau of AF participants) in total to be involved with the event.
  • Meeting the families to participate in the Virtually on Track Koru Quest in October and the Scavenger Hunt in April. Lots of fun for all ages and encourages free physical activity options in our local backyard.
  • Initiated a Sport Bay of Plenty survey for participants so we can continually track effectiveness and insights regarding the current format.

Success Stories

banana on toast

A nine-year-old boy was referred to the programme last year for inactivity and rapid weight gain. He had got into habits of missing breakfast, eating large portion sizes during dinner and not being active. Improvements were made by eating breakfast, reducing his portion sizes, not going back for seconds and cutting out fizzy drinks and chips.

He now eats cereal or banana on toast and has a homemade smoothie made with low fat milk and fresh fruit for breakfast. He eats at scheduled times throughout the day and has stopped eating takeaways and savoury foods. At our last assessment he had reduced his BMI as well. His activity levels had increased by playing ripper rugby.
The family has been very committed to the programme attending the Healthy Cooking session, two scavenger hunt events and the Active Families Weetbix Tryathlon pre-training sessions held at Memorial Park.
To support his performance with the Weetbix Tryathlon event, he attended the Baywave ‘Learn to Swim’ programme encouraging water confidence and the Flip Out Ninja Programme for general fitness. The family finds the visits from the Active Families Advisor very helpful to ensure he stays motivated and increasing his physical activity levels.
