all people participating in the physical recreation and sport activities of their choice
The Halberg trust Sport Opportunity Programme is committed to ensuring people with a disability can participate in inclusive sport and active leisure within their community.
The Sport Opportunity advisors work with Regional Sports Trusts Staff, and in Primary, Intermediate and Secondary Schools, as well as in the community.
The advisor can:
- Work in Partnership with schools to enable children with a disability to have the same sporting, physical education and active leisure opportunities as their peers
- Provide practical ideas, resources and training for teachers and teacher aides, including ideas for the modification of games and activities to include students in all abilities.
- Provide advice to teachers and coaches/trainers on including students with a disability at school events.
- Assist in the development of IEP targets is sport or physical activity.
- Provide information on inclusive extra-curricular sports activities.
The Halberg Trust Activity Fund
The Activity Fund is set up to assist young people with a disability, under the age of 16 to participate in sport and active leisure. Applications can be made for equipment such as modified bikes or Boccia balls, or an activity such as a set of swimming lessons or to cover the cost of a support person to go to a local club. Halberg Trust will fund those costs over and above what it would cost for a child without a disability to participate in community sport, recreation and physical activity in an inclusive environment. Equipment that promotes inclusion of all students in schools is often funded.
No Exceptions Training
The No Exceptions Training is a free professional development that will enhance teaching and coaching skills and opportunities. It will focus on inclusion of all participants into the physical education programme, adaptation of games and some ideas for new games that can be used with children. The workshops deliberately use a practical approach, and the promotion of positive attitudes toward disability and sport and physical activity is seen as the main priority. There is also a module that focuses on open doors into a public group, such as the local club or event centre. This has a strong emphasis on disability awareness and builds the confidence of the participants to involve all people in their community.
