KiwiSport Fundamentals Project

On the 11th August 2009, The Minister of Education announced the KiwiSport fund. Sport Bay of Plenty designed and completed a comprehensive community consultation plan involving whole school communities. Through the community consultation process 7 priorities were identified for the Bay of Plenty: Fundamental Skill Development, Collaboration, Quality Competitions / Events, Reducing Inequalities, Quality People, Key Messages and Professional Development.

Fundamentals Programme
KiwiSport – Regional Flagship Project

Background
In the recent KiwiSport consultation, Fundamental Skill Development was the top priority across the Bay of Plenty (85% of participants ranked Fundamental Skill Development within the top 3 priorities under the Kiwisport funding). As such Sport Bay of Plenty is developing a programme in conjunction with the sporting codes, schools and wider community that will aim to provide a learning environment where young people develop fundamental sport skills so they have the right building blocks to play sport for life.

The programme will be targeted at 5-12 years olds as well as upskilling parents, teachers and coaches. It is likely that the programme will be delivered by Sporting Codes and Recreation providers, coordinated by Sport BOP, include in-school and out-of-school components, and have a long term focus.

Designing the programme
So far the following progress has been made:

• A review of current practice within NZ and around the world
• Testing of skill levels across the Bay of Plenty in targeted schools
• Establishment of nine advisory groups across the various ‘skill’ sets

Branding
In order to ensure that the Fundamentals Skills programme is recognizable within our community, SBOP have undergone an extensive design process around the brand development. Whilst this phase is still in development, Sport BOP and King Street advertising have consulted several times with key stakeholders as well as young children to ensure that the branding is relevant, aspirational and recognisable within our community.

Next Steps
Whilst the programme as a whole is continuing to develop, some aspects require a little more work than others. Where necessary SBOP are investing in piloting various skill programmes in terms 3 and 4 2010 to ensure that when our final product is available that our community will receive maximum benefit. The aim is to be fully operational in 2011.
