Connect Sport
SPARC is pursuing its vision to be ‘the most active nation’ by bringing together local, regional and national stakeholders to align resources and policy. Active Communities Investment is aimed at increasing participation and challenging behaviour in relation to physical activity participation at local and regional levels through investing in a collaborative approach to identified needs with stakeholders.
A successful application to SPARC's Active Communities Funding by Sport BOP, Katikati Community Board, Te Puke Community board, Katikati College and Te Puke High School, has seen the birth of ‘Connect Sport’ in these regions. A project steering group together with a project manager will oversee the implementation of the Connect Sport project plan during the next three years – ultimately with the view of increasing participation in sport through a better connected community.
Sport & Recreation is integral to the Western Bay of Plenty way of life. It helps build the social cohesion that binds families, communities, and the region and reaches across our community in many ways.
In particular Sport & Recreation builds the following:
- Growing Good People
- Social Cohesion
- Economic Benefit

- Regional Identity
- A Healthier Community

Connect Sport has three key strategic outcomes:
- Participation – an average increase of 15% in targeted sport
- Volunteers – an average increase of 15% in volunteer numbers
- Facilities – 80% satisfaction in use and quality of facilities and reserve
