Introducing our Board


Grant Utteridge
Chairperson of the Board
Grant is a commercial property valuer and company director who lives in Rotorua with his wife, Colleen, and two teenage sons. Since an early age he has had a huge love for sport. Having recognized the immense benefits of being active, he has taken part in a wide range of sports at various levels particularly squash and cricket. Grant has always had a strong belief in reinvesting in sport and has contributed extensively in various sports at a coaching and administrative level. Grant has wide sports administration experience for a large spectrum of sporting organizations having chaired local and regional sports. Grant brings management experience and a passion for healthy active living to the Board of Sport Bay of Plenty. 


Gill Gemming
Gill has recently resigned her role as the New Zealand Hockey Federation National Development Manager however will continue to work with the national body in various capacities. Gill has had a long and successful association with hockey at all levels, particularly in the area of coaching, and was one of the first Sport Development Officers appointed as part of Sport Bay of Plenty's successful Coach Force programme. Gill is the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees at Tauranga Boys College and through her family been actively involved in many community initiatives.

Craig Corbett
Through his own interests and those of his family Craig is keen to promote sport and recreation in his region and with that achieve a higher awareness of good health through physical activity. Living in Rotorua, a company director he brings marketing and business skills to the Sport Bay of Plenty Board.
Paul Owen
Paul, with wife Delwyn and four teenage children reside in Opotiki where he is the local dentist. Currently serving on the Board of the Bay of Plenty Rugby union and a community representative on the Opotiki District Council Sport and Recreation Committee, Paul brings a lifelong involvement in sport to the board. He is looking forward to using this experience in promoting an Eastern Bay of Plenty perspective to board affairs.
Carol Quirk
Carol has been involved with sport at international, national, regional and local levels. Her main sports are surf life saving and netball. Carol was previously the Manager of Sport Development at the Hillary Commission, a role which saw her work closely with National and Regional Sporting Organisations. Currently she is a member of the NZ Sport Tribunal and is actively involved at club level being involved in examining and coaching at Opotiki Surf Club. Carol is keen to work with the Sport Bay of Plenty Board on the challenges facing sport and recreation in the region.
Shan Tapsell
Shan grew up in Rotorua and is of Ngati Whakaue descent. She is keen to progress issues around physical activity and wellness believing that encouraging people to choose healthy lifestyles is a huge issue for society today. As a participant in a range of sports and as a mother of four boys she knows the positive motivating and empowering aspects of sport and health and is excited to be part of the Sport Bay of Plenty vision to be the most active community in New Zealand.

 
 


Paul Wollaston
Paul is the finance director at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. He actively participates in a range of sports both personally but also as he follows the sporting interests of his children. Over the years his interests have ranged from marathons to soccer and inline hockey at both a participant and administrative / management level. In addition he currently assists other sporting clubs as an honorary auditor. Paul firmly believes that keeping active is directly linked to keeping healthy and happy. With his background and experience in financial and administrative system support, he looks forward to the challenge of assisting Sport BOP support its communities.
 




 

Graham Young
Graham Young brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Board, particualry in the Education space. Graham recently retired after 24 years as Principal of Tauranga Boys’ College, and currently works as a Secondary Principal Consultant with the Institute of Professional studies at the University of Waikato. Grahgam has had variety of teaching experiences, including the position was clearly that of Principal, received the Woulfe Fisher fellowship,and was President of the Secondary Principals Association of New Zealand. “I have incredible faith in the Young people leaving school today, they are “the best generation of young people this nation of ours has ever produced”. Apart from Sport Bay of Plenty, Graham is also a trustee of the Tauranga Art Gallery and Outward Bound New Zealand,and a councilor of the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.
